Stephan Weitzel
born in 1970 in Stuttgart, Germany; settles in Paris at the age of 19; at the Sorbonne-Nouvelle, takes classes in drama and Franco-German studies; works as a language teacher and translator. Moves to Great-Britain; studies art in London and Norwich; sets up studio in Paris, continues drawing classes. In the following years, works as a radio producer, a speaker and as an extra in film; teaches German at Ecole du Louvre and Lycée Louis-le-Grand. Signs as the director’s assistent and art director of Joel Cano’s Siete días Siete noches. Receives various grants and travels to work in Cuba, Ireland (Cork, Sculpture Factory, map programme/Pépinières pour jeunes artistes), Austria (Graz, European Forum for Emerging Creation), Germany (Weimar, ACC European Studio Programme) and India (New-Delhi/Kolkata, Artists-in-Residence, French Embassy). Exhibits in solo and group shows in these countries; interventions in public space; fictional and theoretical writing. Settles in Marseille; conceives and realizes the stage design for Résidence Secondaire, by Company Christophe Haleb.
On New Year’s Day 2007, settles in Berlin.
